Full-time UX Content Strategist

Synopsis of Role:

The marketing web content team is seeking a UX Content Strategist who’s equal parts storyteller and user experience champion. We need someone who will craft web content where the tone, meaning, and ordering of words will bring humanity, clarity, and delight to the user experience.

This role focuses on the public-facing web pages for the university with the primary focus on the prospective student audience. Superior copywriting skills are required, but this is not a long-form copywriting position. Our ideal candidate is as comfortable writing a memorable tagline as distilling a complicated concept down to 20 words.

Essential Functions:

• Understands who APUS customers are, what language they use, and then ensure the words you write speak their language.

• Helps build credibility with prospective students by putting simplicity and clarity at the heart of your writing style.

• Distills industry jargon and policies into concise and engaging messages for our prospects.

• Looks at existing content and propose changes to what doesn’t help prospects find, understand, and choose us.

• Identifies opportunities to increase conversions via our web content, and share these observations with the appropriate teams.

• Writes for mobile first: more than half of your work will be viewed on mobile responsive web pages.

• Works with the search engine optimization (SEO) team to integrate keywords as necessary throughout the page content and meta data to continually improve organic search results.

• Follows and enforces internal style and brand guidelines, and understand external federal regulations governing higher education.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

• Standard office environment in Manassas, VA.

• Telecommuting at management’s discretion will require high-speed Internet connection and a dedicated workspace within your place of residence.


Required Skills:

• Superior copywriting skills and direct experience creating content for marketing web pages (not long-form copywriting).

• Excellent proofreading and editing skills.

• Ability to effectively capture and document stakeholder requirements and feedback.

• Excellent interpersonal communications skills: comfortable interacting verbally and in writing with coworkers on all levels, while mindful of appropriate chain of command.

• Capability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and working autonomously towards deadlines.

• Technically competent and comfortable learning new apps and systems with little support.

Required Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, design, marketing, or related fields is preferred.

• Three plus years of web content strategy experience, preferably supporting large enterprise websites or marketing teams.

• Familiarity with the higher education market preferred.

• Working knowledge of basic HTML/CSS and content management systems (CMS) preferred.

• Background using design applications (i.e. Adobe CC, Sketch, InVision, etc.) for producing quality deliverables to share with stakeholders preferred.

• Must provide an online portfolio or links to websites/pages/apps where you were the majority copywriting contributor.
