Full-time Seeking junior/mid-level UX designer for health technology startup

at Cohero Health in New York

Cohero Health is looking for a junior to mid-level UX designer who practices user-centered design, possesses strong visual design skills, and is interested in creating a medically helpful, habit-forming, IOT healthcare product.

Who is Cohero Health?

We’re a small team of folks on a mission to help people with asthma and COPD breathe better. We couple software and Bluetooth hardware to improve care by: helping people understand their respiratory condition better; letting people track medication usage with Bluetooth sensors that fit inhalers; sending smart reminders; measuring lung health with state-of-the-art spirometers and PEF/FEV1 meters; and connecting patients to doctors in real-time.

Why should I join?

If you’re interested in practicing user-centered design at a fast-paced startup, transforming healthcare, and working on products that patients and doctors are really excited to use, this is a great opportunity and we’d like to hear from you.

What you’ll do as a UX designer at Cohero

Cohero believes in and practices user-centered design. As a member of the UX team, you’ll work on our flagship products including: our native iOS and Android app, BreatheSmart; a web-portal for patients; a web-portal for doctors and caregivers; a native clinical tablet app that measures lung function. You’ll be encouraged to voice opinions and back them up with research. You’ll have the chance to give feedback on hardware, software, and the entire user experience from receiving our hardware in the mail, to using our apps, to connecting with doctors.

There’s a lot to learn. We’re breaking new ground, and what we’re building has never been available before to either patient or doctor.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Drawing on user research, business goals, and technology constraints to come up with elegant and enjoyable design solutions.
  • Creating UX deliverables that document your work, from user flow diagrams, to wireframes, prototypes, and final design files.
  • Communicating your ideas effectively to an international team verbally, visually and textually.

Who we’re looking for:

You’ll enjoy and succeed in this role if you love a fast and nimble work environment, breaking new ground, and have a passion for analytical thought and creativity. You’ll feel frustrated in this role if you don’t enjoy solving complex problems and figuring out nuances.

Your skill-set should include general facility with the user-centered design toolbox, meaning the ability to:

  • Research (qualitative and quantitative)
  • Ideate (affinity diagrams, concept mapping, sketching)
  • Design (user stories, user flows, personas, wireframing & prototyping, copywriting, annotations)
  • Validate and iterate (heuristic evaluation, user testing)
  • Deliver (high-res visual design)

Specialization and knowledge about the following areas will be especially beneficial for this role.

  • Gamification. Our platform is designed to build good habits among people taking medication, and experience and interest in creating habit-forming products will be beneficial.
  • Research. Facilitate ethnographic projects and report results using skills such as identifying user populations; usability testing; and passing that information to other team members, so they can make informed decisions.
  • User testing. This includes recruitment and moderation of in-person and remote tests.
  • Visual design. The ability to follow company style guides and bring wires to pixel perfect high-fidelity.

Soft skills that we’re looking for:

  • Creativity
  • Analytical thinking
  • Timeliness and punctuality
  • Able to meet deadlines
  • Open and glad to receive and give critiques and constructive feedback
  • Excellent writing abilities
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent listening skills
  • Deep understanding and belief in the fundamentals that guide user-centered design
  • Ability to work as part of a distributed team
  • Ability to be follow direction, yet also be self-directed and take initiative

Hard skills:

  • Sketch
  • Adobe suite
  • Visual design
  • Prototyping tools (at least 1 that allows for complex animation)

Nice to haves:

  • Front-end and mobile development knowledge
  • Data visualization skills
  • Previous experience running something (your own business, projects)
  • Experience with habit building products

  • Experience working within an agile environment
  • Designing from pre-existing brand guidelines and pattern libraries
  • Design work that demonstrates knowledge of iOS and Android native app guidelines

How to apply

To apply, please be prepared to provide examples of the following:

  • A portfolio of UX design work that features design rationale and includes functional specs, user journeys and flows, sitemaps, animation prototypes, high-fidelity designs and assets
  • Professional references
  • Cover letter explaining why this position interests you
  • Email with subject line: “Application for Cohero Health UX job”. If your subject line doesn’t have this typed correctly, your application won’t be reviewed.

We’re looking forward to hearing from you!
